Frequently asked questions about candle care

Understanding how to properly care for your candles is key to a delightful and safe experience. Here are some common questions and our expert advice to help you get the most out of your Candle D Light purchase.

For an optimal burn, always place your candle on a heat-proof surface, away from any hanging objects, drafts, and out of reach of children and pets. Before each light, ensure the wick is trimmed to approximately 6mm (a quarter of an inch). We recommend burning your candle for a maximum of four hours at a time to prevent overheating and ensure an even melt pool.

What are the most important things customers should do to make their candles burn beautifully and last as long as possible?

Are there any crucial safety tips or 'do's and don'ts' you want to make sure everyone knows when burning your candles?

Absolutely, safety is paramount. Always keep your candle out of reach of children and pets. Never burn a candle near curtains, loose fabrics, or anything else that could catch fire. Crucially, never leave a burning candle unattended, and do not burn any candle for more than four hours consecutively. Do not let the candle burn completely out, blow out before it gets to a cm before the bottom of the candle.

What are some common mistakes or problems people might have with candles that you want to help them avoid?

One common mistake is not allowing the candle to form a full melt pool on its first burn, which can lead to 'tunnelling' – where the wick burns straight down the middle, leaving wax on the sides. For the first burn, ensure the candle melts to the edge of the vessel, typically taking at least three hours. Another issue is leaving the wick too long, which can cause an uneven burn, excessive soot, and a larger, flickering flame.

Is there anything unique about caring for your handmade candles, compared to other candles, that customers should know?

Our Candle D Light products are lovingly hand-poured using natural soy wax, which may behave slightly differently from mass-produced paraffin candles. Natural waxes burn cleaner and often have a softer texture. It's especially important to follow the first burn instructions diligently to establish a good melt memory. Also, minor variations in appearance are a hallmark of handmade quality, making each candle unique. Always store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their fragrance and appearance.
